My friends at Sophia Books are closing the doors on their amazing store in downtown Vancouver at then end of May 2010.
I have nothing but love and respect for Marc and Yuki Fournier, and all of my friends who work there.
It’s another heartbreaker for book lovers in Vancouver as Sophia represented the best and most unique selection of international art, graphic design, comix, fiction, non-fiction, manga and magazines not only in the city, the province – pretty much anywhere.
I went down there today and took as many pictures as I could of the store before my battery ran out. Check out the Flickr Photo Stream or my Facebook photo album for more.
If you’re in Vancouver please go down to the store and check out this treasure of Vancouver’s disappearing book store culture while you can.

There’s only one way to save bookstores: buy books from them. How many people who, for instance, lamented the demise of Duthie Books actually went out of their way to buy books there, rather than ordering through Amazon, or buying at Chatpers? A purchase is a vote.
It is so sad, Sophia is our favorite bookstore
This sucks. I had only recently found Sophia Books and had loved it! Despite being new here, I still feel the loss of Duthies and now Sophia only a couple of months apart.
I love, though, that bookstores closing is news here, that there’s a community of book lovers who care.
I’ll make sure to pay everyone at Sophia another visit while I can.
There are 3000 bookstores in France, 5000 in Germany.
We need a national program to protect independent booksellers from rent death.
Very sad news, indeed. Great staff, great books.
And the fact that a Chapters google ad appears below the article? Throwing sand in the wound. Keep buying from Mom and Pop!
